Two Public Appearances This Week

I'll be making two public appearances this week in the San Diego area. At both I'll be sharing the findings and perspectives of my book, Liberally Speaking: Why Liberalism is Right for America. The first is tomorrow night, Monday July 11 to the Rancho Penasquitos Democratic Club. President Octavio Aguilar extended the invitation when he found I would be in the area for the later appearance this week. The PQ club meets at 7:00 P.M. at the Shay Realtor Community Hub, 13289 Black Mountain Road #6, Rancho Penasquitos, CA 92129.

If you are in the area and can't make that one, I'll also be appearing on Thursday the 15th at the Poway Democratic Club meeting. The Poway Club meets at the Mainstream Bar and Grill, 13385 Poway Road. The meeting starts at 7:00 but everyone is invited to arrive at 6:00 for dinner and social hour. My thanks to President Pete Babich for this invitation. Both presentations will include a Powerpoint with time for some questions and answers afterward. Signed books will be on sale for $19.95 plus tax at the conclusion of the presentation.

New Review Recommends My Book "Liberally Speaking"

I am happy to see a new review of my book has just come out. It's by Anita Lock in the US Review of Books, and I am pleased to share it with you. You can go to the original here.

Liberally Speaking: Why Liberalism is Right for America
by Stephen J. Natoli
Branden Books

Reviewed by Anita Lock

"Liberal ideas have been the ones that have made society more just, more prosperous and better for people to live in."

Liberally Speaking is a guidebook designed so that "moderates will see the wisdom, sense and success of liberal positions" and to help liberals who "are starving for some affirmation of their views and some explanations they can use to defend and promote the principled positions they hold dear." Complete with a questionnaire, plenty of history, and an in depth explanations on issues, Natoli's attention to liberalism raises awareness of the basic needs and desires of all Americans.
Natoli offers a step-by-step approach to understanding liberalism. He opens by describing his shift from conservative to liberal thinking, followed by providing his audience with a "personal inventory" questionnaire before detailing what the liberal perspective looks like. Divided into five sections, Natoli explains what it means to be a liberal utilizing his 18-point constitution on what liberals believe. Section 2 covers the historical highlights "the liberal record of success" from the early 1600s to present day and the foundations to liberal thought.

While the preceding material is highly educational, the next several chapters under part 3 serve to crystallize liberalism as Natoli addresses where liberals stand on issues. Examples include human rights, health, defense, war and peace, as well as gun issues—just to name a few topics. Part 4 offers balance as Natoli includes a historical perspective on the conservative record of failure, what conservatives believe, and why their thinking doesn't work.

Natoli offers plenty to ruminate on, plus a word of encouragement for his readers, in the last section, to engage in the political process by getting involved in organizations. In closing, Natoli states his groundbreaking read the best: "The American people deserve to see that liberal values are American values, and to appreciate that much of what has made America free and prosperous is a result of great liberal leaders and great liberal ideas."

Two Book Appearances This Week

I'll be making book appearances on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and you are invited!

Tuesday will be on the College of the Sequoias Visalia campus, at 915 S. Mooney Boulevard in the conference room Hospital Rock 133. Here's a link to a campus map. We'll start at 2:30 pm and go until 3:30. There should be students and faculty present for this one.

Wednesday will be at the monthly meeting of the Visalia Democratic Club. It meets at China Garden Restaurant, 1634 S. Mooney Blvd. The Club gathers in the banquet room, to your left after you enter the front door. Most people order dinner around 6:00 and the meeting gets under way around 6:45.

At both appearances I'll have a power point of highlights of my book, Liberally Speaking: Why Liberalism is Right for America. I'll intersperse a couple of readings and follow up with time for comments and questions. Anthropology Professor Marla Prochnow will moderate the discussion.

I'll certainly be preaching to the choir at the Visalia Democratic Club, highlighting the social, civil rights and economic contributions of liberal leaders and the liberal movement to the advancement of American life.

I'll have books available for purchase and signing at the end of each event.

Just a quick note to report I am so busy finishing my book project I haven't had time to post much lately. I'm working on correcting the index of Liberally Speaking and should be finished this week. The release should come very shortly now.
